How to use this calculator

  1. Read the three dimensions from a metric tire marking such as 225/45R17: 225 mm section width, 45% aspect ratio and 17-inch rim diameter.
  2. Enter width, aspect ratio and rim diameter separately. The calculator converts the two sidewalls from millimetres to inches and adds them to rim diameter.
  3. Use the circumference result for gearing and rotation comparisons, but remember that it is nominal geometry rather than a loaded rolling measurement.
  4. When comparing replacement tires, compare both absolute diameter and percentage difference rather than looking only at section width or rim size.
  5. Before changing tires, separately verify load index, speed rating, wheel-width compatibility, suspension and body clearance, and vehicle-manufacturer requirements.

Formula and assumptions

Sidewall height = section width × aspect ratio ÷ 100. Nominal overall diameter = rim diameter + two sidewalls after converting millimetres to inches. Circumference = π × diameter.

GIIRR calculates idealized geometry and kinematics. Friction, slip, compliance, tire deformation, manufacturing tolerances and control-system behavior can move real measurements away from the theoretical result.

Worked example

For 225/45R17, one sidewall is 225 × 0.45 = 101.25 mm, or about 3.99 inches. Two sidewalls plus the 17-inch rim give a nominal diameter of about 24.97 inches and circumference of about 78.45 inches. A real manufacturer's measured diameter can differ slightly because construction and measuring conditions are not captured by the simple formula.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the manufacturer list a slightly different diameter?

Construction, tread depth, inflation pressure, measuring rim, load and rounding can make published dimensions differ from the nominal geometric calculation.

Can I use this diameter in the RPM calculators?

Yes for planning. For higher precision, measured loaded rolling circumference is better because it reflects the real tire under operating conditions.

What does the 45 in 225/45R17 mean?

It is the aspect ratio: nominal sidewall height is 45% of the 225 mm section width. It is not a 45 mm sidewall.

Does a wider tire always have a larger diameter?

No. Diameter depends on both section width and aspect ratio. A wider tire with a lower aspect ratio can have nearly the same overall diameter.

Can matching diameter guarantee fitment?

No. Width, wheel offset and width, load and speed ratings, brake and suspension clearance and manufacturer approvals are separate fitment constraints.
